It might be your job or an important relationship or the feeling you don’t ever have enough time. everyone is feeling stressed out!
whatever the reason, one thing is certain, short and long term stress effects your body brain and mind.
Before iPhones, Candy Crush, and YouTube humans evolved a very specific was to handle stress.
Dealing with large animals hunting us or other threats 40,000 years ago was simple, we ran away or we stood our ground and fought. Its called the “Fight-or-Flight” response.
Large amounts of chemicals in our brain called hormones were need to reacted in those dangerous situations. Usually they were rare and over quickly and the body’s balance returned to normal.
Either way the goal was to stay alive long enough to live another day, and have babies!
The early humans that were really good at this passed on that “Fight-or-Flight” response to the next generation and after many generations we’ve all inherited a highly refine response that is automatic in reaction to a perceived danger.
And that’s the problem. A “perceived” danger. Modern life rarely gives you real life and death situations were this response is needed.
You instead get less threatening yet very upsetting and frustrating situations occurring constantly and civilized society doesn’t allow you to either run away crying or get onto a fist fight to deal with them.
So while your body is undergoing the fight-or-flight response, you are forced to smile and act calmly.
Since all the chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol pumping into your bloodstream can’t be used up it can lead to negative physical and mental effects.
You may use other chemicals like smoking or drinking to counteract the stress hormones. Of course that may lead to abuse and create even more problems.
so what to do? . . .
- Moving and exercising helps to keep the physical systems in your body strong. and better able to tolerate stress.
- Having a solid network of friends or family can let you share your concerns and joys and helps to counteract stress.
- Finally, using mental and physical relaxation skills can help to lower the physical arousal that stress triggers.
